A diplomat begins to suspect that his adopted son may be the Antichrist.

Description

"Why do you make me do it?" New York cop Jim Wilson asks the hoodlum he's about to smash senseless. Jim has seen it all on the city's shadowy streets: killers, thugs, pimps, sadists. And the experience has cost him his soul. Ironically, his redemption may come in his next case, a brutal murder that brings him into the open sky and white light of the countryside and into the arms of a beautiful blind woman. Directed with intensity by Nicholas Ray (Rebel Without a Cause, They Live by Night) and featuring a haunting score by Bernard Herrmann (Psycho), On Dangerous Ground is a taut, rapid-paced manhunt with two fine stars at its tortured heart. Noir master Robert Ryan captures Jim's agonized self-hatred. And Ida Lupino burnishes the screen as the sightless angel whose compassion gives him one last chance at life.

Description

It’s 1908. The West has changed. Grizzled frontiersman Cable Hogue (Jason Robards) hasn’t. Despite the fortune he’s made selling water to thirsty desert travelers, he lies in wait. Someday two no-account desert rats – who long ago robbed Hogue and left him to die in the baking Arizona sand – will drop by for a drink. After the violence of The Wild Bunch, director Sam Peckinpah shifted moods with this memorable fable, less a tale of revenge than it is a lyrical, touching tribute to the last days of the West’s pioneering spirit. Stella Stevens and David Warner lead an excellent supporting cast that also includes L.Q. Jones and Strother Martin as Hogue’s old enemies.

Can armed robbery save a marriage? This comedy starring Natalie Wood, Peter Falk, Dick Shawn and Jonathan Winters debates this and other questions about modern relationships. Penelope (Wood) marries James Elcott (Ian Bannen) after a very brief courtship, and as his star rises in the banking business, he spends less and less time with her. Penelope devises what she thinks is a good plan to get James' attention -- disguising herself as an old lady and robbing his bank. Unfortunately, the robbery is successful, and now Penelope has bigger problems on her hands. Adding extra fizz to this effervescent caper comedy is buoyant and joyful music from John Williams' early days as a film composer. Williams demonstrates his skills with pop and jazz in a score that includes the title tune, featuring lyrics by Leslie Bricusse (Victor/Victoria, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory).
