Pacifiction - On the French Polynesian island of Tahiti, the High Commissioner of the Republic and French government official De Roller (Benoît Magimel) is a calculating man with flawless manners. His somewhat broad perception of his role brings him to navigate the high end ’establishment’ as well as shady venues where he mingles with the locals. Especially since a persistent rumor has been going around: the sighting of a submarine whose ghostly presence could herald the return of French nuclear testing. Description
Product Description From CTdric Klapisch - the award-winning writer/director of L'Auberge Espagnole - comes a deliciously intimate new valentine to the City of Lights featuring an all-star cast that includes Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), Romain Duris (The Beat That My Heart Skipped), MTlanie Laurent (Inglorious Basterds) and Frantois Cluzet (Tell No One). It's the story of a young Moulin Rouge dancer (Duris) awaiting a heart transplant, his single-mother / social worker sister (Binoche), and their rediscovery of the life, laughter and love that hides within every balcony, apartment window, street corner and market stall. These are the stories of the middle-class and bourgeois, immigrants and students, fashion models and homeless, and all the lovers and strangers whose paths could only cross - and whose worlds are about to change forever - in Paris. Amazon.com In Paris, a superb cast led by by Romain Duris (The Beat That My Heart Skipped) and Juliette Binoche (The English Patient,Caché) give emotional heft to a delicate web of social relationships. Previous films of French director Cedric Klapisch have made a microcosm of a neighborhood (When the Cat’s Away) and a shared apartment (L’auberge espagnole). Paris encompasses the City of Lights in an Altman-esque merry-go-round: When a dancer (Duris) discovers he has heart trouble, he’s reluctant to tell his sister (Binoche), a social worker raising three children by herself. Meanwhile, a middle-aged historian (Fabrice Luchini, Claire’s Knee) finds sudden fortune as the host of a television series, but can’t keep himself from sending Baudelaire poems via text message to a lovely young student (Melanie Laurent, Inglourious Basterds). In between these two primary storylines, a multitude of other characters overlap in significant and trivial ways. Minor disappointments and casual pleasures brush against life-changing troubles and, every once in a while, the tantalizing possibility of a lasting happiness. Klapisch has broad ideas about the importance of community, spontaneity, and human contact, but the movie’s success lies in the grit and vividness of simple social interactions--awkward, combative, misunderstood, and joyous. There are missteps (a flimsy dream sequence jars against the movie’s deft naturalism), but they’re small and forgivable. Paris is a lovely and moving film, full of offhand gestures and accidents that will linger in your memory, charged with unexpected resonance. --Bret Fetzer

Spiritual rapture and institutional hypocrisy come to stark, vivid life in one of the most transcendent masterpieces of the silent era. Chronicling the trial of Joan of Arc in the days leading up to her execution, Danish master Carl Theodor Dreyer depicts her torment with startling immediacy, employing an array of techniques including expressionistic lighting, interconnected sets, and painfully intimate close-ups to immerse viewers in her subjective experience. Anchoring Dreyer's audacious formal experimentation is a legendary performance by Renée Falconetti, whose haunted face channels both the agony and the ecstasy of martyrdom. Description
Rod Serling’s tale of ruthless men and ambitious women clawing for control of a billion dollar empire first aired in Jan 1955 on Kraft Television Theater. The hard-hitting teleplay was such a success, earning Serling instant acclaim and the first of his six Emmy awards, that producers Jed Harris and Michael Myerberg helmed a big screen feature with the same director (Fielder Cook) and most of the same cast for United Artists. The result was an acid-etched chronicle of the cutthroat corporate world starring Van Heflin, Everett Sloane, and Ed Begley, with cinematography by Oscar winner Boris Kaufman (On The Waterfront, 12 Angry Men). This is boardroom bloodletting, the American way! This product is expected to play back in DVD Video "play only" devices, and may not play in other DVD devices, including recorders and PC drives. Restored from original 35mm film elements. Presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio. Restored from original 35mm film elements. Presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio.

Product Description Dario Argento's classic horror starring Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly! The young Jennifer Corvino (played by Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Connelly, in one of her first film roles) is sent to a private Swiss academy for girls where a vicious killer is on the loose, brutally murdering students. Jennifer is a "gifted" girl with the strange ability to communicate with insects, and Dr. McGregor (Donald Pleasence, John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN series, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK) enlists her to help locate the killer. Jennifer finds herself in a bizarre murder plot with maggots, mutants, and razor-wielding chimpanzee mayhem! Can she uncover the killer's identity before becoming a victim herself? Daria Nicolodi (TENEBRAE) and Fiore Argento (DEMONS) also star in this strange, unique and gory film from Italy's Master of Horror, Dario Argento. PHENOMENA also features fantastic soundtrack music from progressive-rock favorite Goblin, British Heavy Metal masters Motörhead & Iron Maiden, Andi Sex Gang, Bill Wyman and Simon Boswell!Synapse Films is proud to present Dario Argento's PHENOMENA on a 2-disc Blu-ray containing THREE different cuts of the film re-mastered in stunning high-definition Bonus Materials THREE different cuts of PHENOMENA, all available in high-definition for the first time ever in one collector's edition package! Creepers) provides what is alternately Argento's most batty and spiritual landscape...Argento s insect fantasia is otherworldly. (Is it a coincidence that Connelly followed her role here with the lead in Jim Henson s classic Labyrinth?) Phenomena s finale is outrageous, a combination of grotesque Freudian pathologies unleashed, evocations of chimp love, a gruesome finger loss and a wicked decapitation." ---Slant Magazine "Phenomena may not be as consistent as Argento's masterpieces but it's frequently fantastic and deserves a reappraisal" ---SciFiNow

Brazil's official selection for the 2024 Academy Awards, PICTURES OF GHOSTS, from acclaimed director Kleber Mendonça Filho (BACURAU, AQUARIUS and NEIGHBORING SOUNDS), is a multidimensional journey through time, sound, architecture and filmmaking, set in the urban landscape of Recife, Brazilian coastal capital of Pernambuco: a historical and human territory, examined through the great movie theatres that served as spaces of conviviality during the 20th century. Having hosted dreams and progress, these places have also embodied a major transformation on social practices. Combining archive documentary, mystery, film clips and personal memories, PICTURES OF GHOSTS is a map of a city through the lens of cinema. Ping Pong is a zero-to-hero tale of friendship, dedication and sportsmanship, featuring exhilarating table-tennis battles. Punkish ping pong prodigy Peco (Yosuke Kubozuka; Go, Silence) is on a losing streak, not helped by his friend since childhood, Smile (ARATA; After Life, United Red Army), intentionally letting him win in their practice sessions. As tournament day draws near, it is up to Peco to regain his mojo to take on such fearsome opponents as China (Sam Lee; Made in Hong Kong), who has fallen off the Chinese national team and wound up, bitter, in Japan, and Dragon (Nakamura Shido), their arch-nemesis from the rival Kaio Academy team, who approaches the table with an almost militaristic fanaticism. Adapted from Taiyo Matsumoto's cult manga series, the debut feature of Fumihiko Sori (Vexille, Fullmetal Alchemist) is a zero-to-hero tale of friendship, dedication and sportsmanship, featuring exhilarating table-tennis battles that will make you never look at the sport in quite the same way again. Bonus Materials HIGH-DEFINITION BLU-RAY PRESENTATION IN 1.85:1 ASPECT RATIO JAPANESE 5.1 DTS-HD MA AUDIO WITH NEW ENGLISH SUBTITLES JAPANESE 2.0 DTS-HD MA AUDIO WITH NEW ENGLISH SUBTITLES STILLS GALLERY TRAILER ORIGINAL AND NEWLY COMMISSIONED ARTWORK BY LUKE INSECT LIMITED EDITION 'OBI STRIP' Cast & Crew Actors: Yôsuke Kubozuka Arata Iura Sam Lee Director: Fumihiko Sori Producer: Shinji Ogawa

Product Description This collection of the historically vital works of America's legendary first African-American filmmakers is the only one of its kind. Funded in part by a highly successful Kickstarter campaign, the packaged set includes no fewer than a dozen feature-length films and nearly twice as many shorts and rare fragments. Subject matter includes race issues that went unaddressed by Hollywood for decades. Films: Birthright (1938), The Blood of Jesus (1941), Body and Soul (1925), The Bronze Buckaroo (1939), By Right of Birth (fragment, 1921), Commandment Keeper Church, Beaufort, South Carolina (excerpt, 1940), The Darktown Revue (1931), Dirty Gertie from Harlem USA (1946), Eleven P.M. (1930), The Exile (1931), The Flying Ace (1926), God s Stepchildren (1938), Heaven-Bound Traveler (1933), Hellbound Train (1930), Hot Biskits (1931), Mercy the Mummy Mumbled (1918), Regeneration (fragment, 1923), The Scar of Shame (1929), S.S. Jones Home Movies (1924-26), The Symbol of the Unconquered: A Story of the KKK (1920), Ten Minutes to Live (1932), Ten Nights in a Bar Room (1926), Two Knights of Vaudeville (1918), Veiled Aristocrats (1932), Verdict Not Guilty (1934), We Work Again (1937), Within Our Gates (1920) Musical scores (for silent films) by Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky), Max Roach, Samuel D. Waymon, the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra, Donald Sosin, Makia Matsumura, Rob Gal, Andrew Simpson Bonus Features: Optional English Subtitles, 80-page booklet with essays and detailed film notes, Interviews with series curators Charles Musser and Jacqueline Stewart, Documentary on the restoration of the films, Documentary on the restoration efforts of the Library of Congress, Archival interview with actors Ethel and Lucia Moses (1978), Tyler Texas Black Film Collection promo film (with Ossie Davis, 1985) and more! Review "One of the year s most exciting and historically significant archival projects, Kino Lorber s Pioneers of African American Cinema collects nearly 20 hours of feature films and short subjects created by and starring entrepreneurial black entertainers between the 20s and 40s. These race films run the gamut from musicals to melodramas to westerns, and showcase the talents of American masters such as Oscar Micheaux, Spencer Williams, Paul Robeson and Zora Neale Hurston. Given that most of these pictures played well outside any kind of traditional distribution system, they ve always been in danger of getting lost, which makes the preservation efforts behind this set all the more heroic. These are important documents of a truly independent cinema, produced outside of a Hollywood that had little interest in what these artists had to offer." -Noel Murray --LATimes.com

Description
The original Ringo films introduced another iconic hero to the spaghetti western; a clean-cut sharp shooter who was markedly different to Clint Eastwood's Man With No Name. In A Pistol For Ringo, the eponymous hero, played by Giuliano Gemma (Day of Anger, Tenebrae), infiltrates a ranch of Mexican bandits to save a beautiful hostage (Nieves Navarro, Death Walks on High Heels). In The Return Of Ringo, the gunslinger, now a veteran of war, disguises himself as a Mexican in order to take revenge on outlaws who have stolen his property and taken his wife. Hugely successful upon their original release, thanks in part to the skilled direction of Duccio Tessari (The Bloodstained Butterfly, Death Occurred Last Night), the Ringo films proved influential on the Italian western, spawning numerous unofficial sequels, due to their gripping set-pieces and unforgettable musical scoring by Ennio Morricone. Arrow Video is proud to present both films in sumptuous new restorations that truly brings their stylish cinematography to life. Description
Product Description Disney and Pixar present an incredible new collection of 12 short films, featuring multiple Academy Award(R) nominees (Best Short Film, Animated: "Presto," 2008; "Day & Night," 2010; "La Luna," 2011) and a host of family favorites. Join the celebration of imagination with this must-own collection, packed with unforgettable animation, fantastic stories and captivating characters. Plus, enjoy all-new extras that share how Pixar's storied talent got their start -- including student films from acclaimed directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton and Pete Docter! Amazon.com The artists at the Pixar Studio used their early short films the way Walt Disney's artists used the "Silly Symphonies": to explore the medium of animation and to hone their skills in preparation for their first features, Toy Story and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, respectively. Today, Pixar is the most successful animation studio in the world and they continue to test ideas, techniques, technologies, and artists in short films. "Day & Night," Teddy Newton's clever study of two characters who look alike but act differently, and "Presto," Doug Sweetland's slapstick duel between a fussy magician and his recalcitrant rabbit, recall the great Warner Bros. and MGM cartoons of the '40s and '50s. In contrast, a gentle nostalgia pervades Enrico Casarosa's charming "La Luna," the story of a small boy finding his own way of performing a magical job. All three films earned Oscar nominations. Other shorts bring back characters the artists still enjoy animating: Remy from Ratatouille, Dug from Up, Mater from Cars, and the whole Toy Story gang. The tone and the look of the films vary widely, but they all exhibit a palpable delight in the art of animation and a desire to push the medium in new directions. The bonus features include student films by Oscar-winning directors John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton, and Pete Docter. It's fun to look for the roots of the great Pixar films in these early works: the turquoise and purple monster in Stanton's "A Story" looks a bit like Sully in Monsters, Inc.; the little boy's room in Lasseter's "Nitemare" anticipates Andy's room in Toy Story. This delightful collection is an all-too-rare family entertainment that an entire family can actually enjoy together. (Rated G: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon (Your Friend the Rat, Presto, Burn-E, Partly Cloudy, Dug's Special Mission, George & A. J., Day & Night, Hawaiian Vacation, Air Mater, Small Fry, Time Travel Mater, La Luna)

Description
Product description No Description Available. Genre: Feature Film-Action/Adventure Rating: PG Release Date: 24-APR-2007 Media Type: DVD Amazon.com There's no mistaking the 1968 mood of Play Dirty: this cynical war movie could only have been made during the disillusioned Vietnam era, despite its WWII subject. Michael Caine plays a British captain in North Africa, tapped to lead a suicidal mission across the desert to destroy a German fuel depot. He's got a scurvy band of mercenaries to help him (this was a year after The Dirty Dozen, so keep that in mind), although most of the time they seem indifferent to both the job and Caine's survival. Nigel Davenport plays Caine's black-hearted yet lethally competent assistant, possibly the most nihilistic character on the side of the good guys in any war movie. Large patches of the film play without dialogue, including a grueling sequence in which vehicles are winched up the side of a hill, but somehow this adds to the grim, fatalistic atmosphere. The hard edge suits the style of director Andre De Toth, veteran maker of many a B-picture (this was his next-to-last effort). Caine plays it repressed and close to the vest, the better to contrast with Davenport's Mephistophelian soldier of fortune. Oh, and the ending--well, you'll want to stick around for the ending. It was 1968, after all. --Robert Horton

Description
"Cecil B. DeMille s thought-to-be-lost 1915 silent film The Captive, is a found treasure. Set during the Balkan Wars, The Captive tells the story of Sonia (Blanche Sweet, The Woman in White), a young woman living in Montenegro and left to care for her younger brother Milos (Gerald Ward, The Warrens of Virginia) and the family farm when older brother Marko (Page Peters, Davy Crockett) goes off to battle. Unable to handle the day-to-day tasks following her brother s tragic death, help comes in the form of Mahmud Hassan (House Peters, Prisoners of the Storm) a captured Turk nobleman now a prisoner of war. Tasked with helping Sonia, their initial frosty relationship soon melts into love. As the war rages on Sonia, Mahmud and Milos will face near-insurmountable obstacles in their quest for a better life amidst the hell of war. Directed by Cecil B. DeMille (The Ten Commandments, The Buccaneer) from a screenplay written by DeMille and Jeanie Macpherson (based on her play), the wartime romantic drama The Captive features supporting performances by Jeanie Macpherson (The Girl of the Golden West), Theodore Roberts (The Ten Commandments), William Elmer (The Devil and Miss Jones) and features a musical score newly composed by Lucy Duke."

Description
In one of his first-ever roles, a young Jack Nicholson stars as Lt. Andre Duvalier, a soldier in Napoleon's army in 19th century France, separated from his regiment. He awakens on a beach to the sight of a strange woman who leads him to the gothic, towering castle that serves as home to eerie Baron Von Leppe (Boris Karloff). But, as Duvalier soon discovers, nothing is what it seems in this ghastly, haunted mansion of death! This underground favorite was made in classic Roger Cormanfashion, making the most of his resources to bring yet another film to life on a minimal budget for his producers at American International Pictures. Short on time himself (there were more movies to be made!), Corman left it to a few of the aspiring directors within his crew (among them, Jack Hill, a young Francis Coppola, and even Jack Nicholson taking a turn behind the camera for a few scenes) to help see the film to completion. The Terror would go on to become a drive-in favorite and late-night TV staple, also appearing under the titles the Terror, Lady of the Shadows and the Castle of Terror.
