“BRAVO” say critics about an entertainer’s tell-all memoir chronicling her days in the cabaret act Barry Nichols and Les Girls. “Libel!” cries another of Les Girls, setting in motion a talons- and fact-baring litigation that proves Les Girls will be girls and that Cole Porter movie musicals will always sparkle. Gene Kelly plays Nichols, and Mitzi Gaynor, Golden Globe Best Actress winner Kay Kendall and Taina Elg are the femmes in this George Cukor-directed romp that won a Best Costume Design Osca and another Golden Globe for Best Comedy/Musical. Among the highlights: a ribald “Ladies in Waiting” and a hepcat parody of The Wild One called “Why Am I So Gone About That Gal?” You’ll be so gone about Les Girls.

While none of the cartoons "of tomorrow" foresaw smartphones or DVD players, these far-fetched contraptions, gadgets, houses and farms, televisions, and various modes of transportation could only come from the madcap mind of Avery and his M-G-M crew. Orphan Lili Daurier joins a carnival and falls under the spell of its star, a suave magician. But it is the show's crippled, embittered puppeteer who truly loves Lili, a love he can express only through his puppets. It is not often that the word 'enchanting' can accurately be applied to a musical, Clive Hirschhorn wrote in The Hollywood Musical, but it was the best way to describe Lili, as well as Leslie Caron's genuinely touching performance.

Description

In this gritty, pre-Code melodrama, hard-luck dame Lilly Turner (Ruth Chatterton) has a terrible habit of falling for the wrong men. There were several masters of animation during Hollywood's golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias -- the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. Having already been integrally involved in the development of Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation, inspiring cartoonists, comedians and filmmakers for decades to come. Avery's unit at Metro Goldwyn Mayer was all about breaking the fourth wall, shattering expectations and making audiences fall down with laughter. His one-shot masterpieces, including Bad Luck Blackie, Red Hot Riding Hood and Symphony in Slang, have proven themselves pure gold. And continuing characters like Droopy, Screwball Squirrel and George & Junior -- not to mention Spike, Red and The Wolf -- remain unforgettable comic personas among the top rank of cartoondom. Avery's cartoons were ahead of their time -- and their time has come. Finally committed to Blu-ray , this first collection of restored Technicolor shorts feels fresh and new, and is funnier than ever. This set will delight young and old -- and will amaze a new generation ready to laugh again. -- JERRY BECK, Animation Historian
