This collection features three film noir classics. SINGAPORE (1947) – Adventure and romance in the city of intrigue! The irresistible duo of Fred MacMurray (Double Indemnity, The Apartment) and Ava Gardner (The Killers, On the Beach) star in this exotic film noir from director John Brahm (The Lodger, Hangover Square). In pre-war Singapore, Matt Gordon (MacMurray) falls in love with the beautiful Linda Grahame (Gardner), but loses contact with her when the Japanese attack. Five years later, he returns to Singapore to retrieve a fortune in smuggled pearls and accidentally reconnects with Linda, now married to rich planter Van Leyden (Roland Culver, Dead of Night) and suffering from amnesia. Meanwhile, the sinister Mauribus (Thomas Gomez, Key Largo) schemes to steal Matt’s pearls. Richard Haydn (The Emperor Waltz), Spring Byington (I’ll Be Seeing You), Porter Hall (The General Died at Dawn) and Philip Ahn (China) round out the cast of this exciting, romantic noir. JOHNNY STOOL PIGEON (1949) – They cracked the back of the world’s blackest racket! A cop! A dame! A killer! Cult filmmaker William Castle, the macabre mastermind behind House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, 13 Ghosts and Let’s Kill Uncle, delivers a different kind of shadowy suspense story with Johnny Stool Pigeon. Howard Duff (Woman in Hiding) is San Francisco-based Treasury agent George Morton, who goes undercover to break up a narcotics ring. Dan Duryea (Scarlet Street) is Johnny Evans, a convict in Alcatraz who makes a deal with George, becoming the titular “stool pigeon.” Shelley Winters (Larceny) is the ringleader’s feisty moll who gets involved in the sting. It’s cops versus smugglers in Castle’s hardboiled film noir that co-stars John McIntire (An Act of Murder), Leif Erickson (The Lady Gambles) and Tony Curtis (The Midnight Story) in an early role as a mute killer. THE RAGING TIDE (1951) – Not even the fury of the lashing sea…could match the raging passions that bound them! A San Francisco gangster is rubbed out by rival Bruno Felkin (Richard Conte, Cry of the City), who himself reports the crime to Homicide Lieutenant Kelsey (Stephen McNally, The Lady Gambles) in an alibi scheme which fails. To escape, he stows away on a fishing boat, where skipper Hamil Linder (Charles Bickford, Duel in the Sun) receives Bruno kindly. Later, Bruno enlists Hamil’s son Carl (Alex Nicol, Because of You) to do his dirty work offshore, but things turn sour when Carl takes an interest in Bruno’s girl Connie (Shelley Winters, He Ran All the Way). An exhilarating, stormy climax highlights this unique seafaring noir from prolific director George Sherman (Larceny, The Sleeping City) and ace cinematographer Russell Metty (The Stranger, Touch of Evil). Special Features: -Brand New 2K Masters -NEW Audio Commentary for SINGAPORE by Film Historian Kat Ellinger and Author/Film Historian Lee Gambin -NEW Audio Commentary for JOHNNY STOOL PIGEON by Professor and Film Scholar Jason A. Slacker, directed by Richard Linklater (Dazed and Confused), presents a day in the life of a loose-knit Austin, Texas, subculture populated by eccentric and overeducated young people. Shooting on 16 mm for a mere $3,000, writer-producer-director Linklater and his crew of friends threw out any idea of a traditional plot, choosing instead to create a tapestry of over a hundred characters, each as compelling as the last. Slacker is a prescient look at an emerging generation of aggressive nonparticipants, and one of the key films of the American independent film movement of the 1990s.

Susan Seidelman established her distinctive vision of 1980s New York with this debut feature, the lo-fi original for her vibrant portraits of women reinventing themselves. After escaping New Jersey, the quintessentially punk Wren (Susan Berman)—a sparkplug in fishnets who lives dangerously downtown—moves to the city with the mission of becoming famous. When not pasting up flyers for herself or hanging at the Peppermint Lounge, she’s getting involved with Paul (Brad Rijn), the nicest guy to ever live in a van next to the highway, and Eric (Richard Hell), an aloof rocker. Shot on 16 mm film that captures the grit and glam of the setting, with an alternately moody and frenetic soundtrack by the Feelies and others, Smithereens—the first independent American film to compete for the Palme d’Or—is an unfaded snapshot of a bygone era. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 2K digital restoration, approved by director Susan Seidelman, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • Audio commentary from 2004 featuring Seidelman • New interviews with Seidelman and actor Susan Berman • And You Act Like One Too (1976) and Yours Truly, Andrea G. Stern (1979), two early shorts by Seidelman, with new introductions by the director • PLUS: An essay by critic Rebecca Bengal Top About this item Similar From the Brand Reviews Smithereens (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

There were several masters of animation during Hollywood's golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias -- the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. Having already been integrally involved in the development of Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation, inspiring cartoonists, comedians and filmmakers for decades to come. Avery's unit at Metro Goldwyn Mayer was all about breaking the fourth wall, shattering expectations and making audiences fall down with laughter. His one-shot masterpieces, including Bad Luck Blackie, Red Hot Riding Hood and Symphony in Slang, have proven themselves pure gold. And continuing characters like Droopy, Screwball Squirrel and George & Junior -- not to mention Spike, Red and The Wolf -- remain unforgettable comic personas among the top rank of cartoondom. Avery's cartoons were ahead of their time -- and their time has come. Finally committed to Blu-ray , this first collection of restored Technicolor shorts feels fresh and new, and is funnier than ever. This set will delight young and old -- and will amaze a new generation ready to laugh again. -- JERRY BECK, Animation Historian

The cornerstone of director Richard Linklater’s career‑long exploration of cinematic time, this celebrated three-part romance captures a relationship as it begins, begins again, deepens, and strains over the course of almost two decades. Chronicling the love of Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), from their first meeting as idealistic twentysomethings to the disillusionment they face together in middle age, The Before Trilogy also serves as a document of a boundary-pushing and extraordinarily intimate collaboration between director and actors, as Delpy and Hawke imbue their characters with a sense of lived-in experience, and age on-screen along with them. Attuned to the sweeping grandeur of time’s passage as well as the evanescence of individual moments, the Before films chart the progress of romantic destiny as it navigates the vicissitudes of ordinary life. DIRECTOR-APPROVED THREE-BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New, restored 2K digital transfers of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset and a 2K digital master of Before Midnight, approved by director Richard Linklater, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on Before Sunrise and 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks on Before Sunset and Before Midnight New discussion featuring Linklater and actors Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke, moderated by critic Kent Jones Behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from the productions of Before Sunrise and Before Sunset Audio commentary on Before Midnight by Delpy, Linklater, and Hawke Richard Linklater: Dream Is Destiny, a feature-length 2016 documentary by Louis Black and Karen Bernstein After Before, a new documentary by Athina Rachel Tsangari about the making of Before Midnight in Greece New conversation between scholars Dave Johnson and Rob Stone about Linklater’s work Episode of the radio program Fresh Air featuring host Terry Gross, Linklater, Delpy, and Hawke Linklater // On Cinema & Time, a 2016 video essay by filmmaker :: kogonada English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing PLUS: An essay on the trilogy by critic Dennis Lim BEFORE SUNRISE An exquisitely understated ode to the thrill of romantic possibility, the inaugural installment of The Before Trilogy opens with a chance encounter between two solitary young strangers. After they hit it off on a train bound for Vienna, the Paris university student Celine and the scrappy American tourist Jesse impulsively decide to spend a day together before he returns to the U.S. the next morning. As the pair roam the streets of the stately city, Richard Linklater’s tenderly observant gaze captures the uncertainty and intoxication of young love, from the first awkward stirrings of attraction to the hopeful promise that Celine and Jesse make upon their inevitable parting. BEFORE SUNSET In the breathtaking follow-up to Before Sunrise, Celine tracks down Jesse, now an author, at the tail end of his book tour in Paris, with only a few hours left before he is to board a flight back home to the States. Meeting almost a decade after their short-lived romance in Vienna, the pair find their chemistry rekindled by increasingly candid exchanges about professional setbacks, marital disappointments, and the compromises of adulthood. Impelled by an urgent sense of the transience of human connection, Before Sunset remains Richard Linklater’s most seductive experiment with time’s inexorable passage and the way love can seem to stop it in its tracks. BEFORE MIDNIGHT The conclusion of The Before Trilogy finds Celine and Jesse several years into a relationship and in the midst of a sun-dappled Greek retreat with their twin daughters and a group of friends. The couple soon find their vacation upended, however, by long-simmering problems that come to a boil. Marked by the emotional depth, piercing wit, and conversational exuberance that Linklater and his actors honed over two decades of abiding with these characters, Before Midnight grapples with the complexities of long-term intimacy, and asks what becomes of love when it has no recourse to its past illusions.

Description

One of the looniest pictures to come along in some time! Stir Crazy teams two of the most brilliant and zany comic performers today: Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Skip (Wilder) and Harry (Pryor) have both been fired from their jobs, so they take off in their van for California to seek fame and fortune, but somewhere along the way the van conks out and they're broke and...well, they have to eat, right? So they land a gig as singing and dancing woodpeckers to promote a bank opening. When two bank robbers steal their costumes and stick up the bank, guess who gets the blame? Skip and Harry are carted off to the state pen for 125 years. They try to keep their sanity and their lives amidst: a sadistic warden, a hulking mass-murderer and an inter-prison rodeo - all with great hilarity.
