In the early 1980s, independent filmmaker Charlie Ahearn and downtown artist Fred Brathwaite headed uptown to capture a thrilling new underground scene taking shape in the South Bronx — graffiti writers, breakdancing b-boys, two turntables and a microphone. The film they made, Wild Style, gave many viewers their first look at the cultural and musical phenomenon called hip-hop. A singular blend of fiction and documentary, it follows lone graffiti artist Lee "Zoro" Quiñones as he tries to succeed on his own terms, supported by Fred "Fab 5 Freddy" Brathwaite, Sandra "Lady Pink" Fabara and Patti Astor, with historic performances by Grandmaster Flash, Busy Bee, The Fantastic Five, The Cold Crush Brothers and The Rock Steady Crew. Chris Stein of Blondie collaborated with Brathwaite on the score, building the actual breakbeats heard in the film — an inspired choice that made the soundtrack an obsession for crate diggers for decades. Endlessly sampled, imitated and debated, Wild Style remains the truest portrait of hip-hop's earliest years and one of the most important music films ever made.
