This spectacular box set comprises 12 classic martial arts films from the famous Shaw Brothers' library, featuring some of their greatest stars—Cheng Pei-pei (Come Drink with Me), Lo Lieh (King Boxer), Sammo Hung (Wheels on Meals), Ti Lung (A Better Tomorrow), and David Chiang (The Boxer from Shantung). Many of these films are debuting for the first time on Blu-ray. Get ready for some exciting thrills and chills as heroes meet villains in a duel to the death! Lady of Steel: Cheng Pei-pei was Hong Kong's first and most celebrated queen of kung fu because her performances set all the standards for future female martial arts stars like Michelle Yeoh. Lady Of Steel is a high-plains-drifter adventure where Cheng Pei-pei plays a swordswoman on a mission: to find the bandits that killed her parents and save the country from foreign invaders. Brothers Five: Years before he was to become famous for directing Bruce Lee in Fist of Fury and Jackie Chan in New Fist of Fury, Lo Wei teamed with superstar swordswoman Cheng Pei-pei (Come Drink with Me) for this action thriller of brotherly love…and death. She stars as Yen Lai, the one woman who can reunite the Kao brothers to rid the Teng Lung Manor of killers—as well as take revenge for their father's murder. The Crimson Charm: Huang Feng both writes and directs this "Martial Arts World" thriller of a noble swordsman and a one-armed swordswoman up against the vicious Crimson Charm gang of thieves and cutthroats. The lovely and lethal Ivy Ling Po teams with the amazing Chang I for a classic tale of good versus evil in which the best man—and one-armed woman—wins. The Shadow Whip: This top-ten box office hit reunites the star duo from Come Drink with Me in another classic action adventure. Cheng Pei-pei (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) radiates her trademark charm while wielding the deadly title weapon, which is implicated in multiple murders and a major heist. Whether single-handedly fighting sixteen bandits or avenging her father's brutal death, she demonstrates why she was Hong Kong's number one swordswoman—and no slouch with the whip either! The Delightful Forest Co-directed by Chang Cheh and Pao Hsueh-li, and written by Ni Kuang, Chang Cheh and Chin Shu-Mei, The Delightful Forest revolves around the legendary hero Wu Sung (Ti Lung), who was sent to the prison in the Meng province after murdering his sister-in-law and a local ruffian. There he was acquainted with the prison officer "Golden Eye" Shih En (Tien Ching), who saved Wu from the baton punishment required for new prisoners. Wu found out that Shih's restaurant, "Delightful Forest," was taken by the local thug "Door God" Chiang Chung (Chu Mu). The Devil's Mirror: This is Sun Chung's very first film for the Shaw Brothers, making it especially interesting and important. He hit the ground running with this action-filled tale of a "Devil Girl" who is setting one clan against another to get her hands on two amazing mirrors with supernatural powers. Only a noble swordsman (played by Lau Dan) and beautiful swordswoman (played by The Thundering Sword star Shu Pei-pei) can stop her. Man of Iron: Chen Kuan-tai exuded incredible power on screen, which his directors used to great advantage in this fight-filled follow-up to the smash hit The Boxer from Shantung. The only thing Chou Lien Huan does wrong is win some money gambling with a Shanghai gang leader's playboy son…but that's enough for the father and child to want obsessive revenge. It all culminates in an incredible climatic fight, choreographed by the legendary Lau Kar-leung and Chan Chuen, co-star of Bruce Lee's Fist of Fury. The Water Margin: The Chang Cheh-directed The Water Margin is the martial arts epic of epics…of epics. Based on the true legend of how 108 rebel heroes living in the mountains were able to repeatedly defeat invading Sung armies, the film starred just about anyone who was a name at Shaw Brothers at the time, like David Chiang, Chen Kuan-tai and Ti Lung. The primitive battles ultimately end in sharp, visually effective images of death and defeat. This is a must-see for any movie fan. The Bride from Hell: Never marry a possessed woman…especially one possessed by the spirit of a girl murdered by the uncle of the groom! That is the moral of this fascinating production, released a full two years before the international success of The Exorcist. Justice must be done and an exorcism, Hong Kong-style, must be performed before anyone can rest in peace. Talented Margaret Hsing Hui makes a fetching spirit in this mystery thriller that also incorporates a laugh or two amidst the chills. Heroes Two: Of the dozens of great martial arts movies made by this prolific and respected director, this tale of legendary Shaolin avengers Fang Shih-yu and Hung Hsi-kuan is often considered one of his best. His collaboration with equally renowned kung fu choreographer Lar Kar-leung was apparent in all the performances, but especially with that of charismatic, capable, then 19-year-old Alexander Fu Sheng. This powerful production is a true landmark in kung fu film history. The Flying Guillotine: Director Ho Meng-hua attained cult status among Western kung fu film fans with The Flying Guillotine. One of the Shaw Brothers' biggest martial arts stars, Chen Kuan-tai, plays the leader of a group of killers, commissioned by the Ching Emperor to use a deadly, beheading weapon to assassinate dissidents. Although based on a true story, the film's weapon was a complete fabrication because in real life, no one ever survived to tell what the actual weapon really looked like. The Dragon Missle: The many fans of the internationally popular Flying Guillotine films and international star Lo Lieh (King Boxer) will love this movie, featuring some of the most exciting martial arts machinery ever conceived. Everybody's fighting for a special elixir and the title tool—an ultra—cool flying boomerang with blades. There are double crosses and ambushes galore before the culminating clash of sizzling steel that must be seen to be believed. THEY SHALL HAVE MURDER WHEREVER THEY GO… For his feature film debut, director Peter Maris (MINISTRY OF VENGEANCE, DIPLOMATIC IMMUNITY) took portions of an unfinished urban conspiracy thriller and added a new psycho-killer procedural to create what may be the most unusual/vicious proto-slasher shocker of the ‘70s: When a series of savage murders rocks St. Louis, the police investigation will lead to a deranged Vietnam vet ''who looks like a cracked-out Seth McFarlane'' (HorrorNews.net), an underground organization of white-collar vigilantes, gratuitous nudity, graphic violence and an absolute masterclass in low-budget regional filmmaking. One of the very first Section 2 Video Nasties, this longtime VHS rarity – also known as PSYCHO PUPPET – is now presented on disc for the first time ever, restored from the only known 35mm print in existence. Product Description Deliverance (BD) Amazon.com One of the key films of the 1970s, John Boorman's Deliverance is a nightmarish adaptation of poet-novelist James Dickey's book about various kinds of survival in modern America. The story concerns four Atlanta businessmen of various male stripe: Jon Voight's character is a reflective, civilized fellow, Burt Reynolds plays a strapping hunter-gatherer in urban clothes, Ned Beatty is a sweaty, weak-willed boy-man, and Ronny Cox essays a spirited, neighborly type. Together they decide to answer the ancient call of men testing themselves against the elements and set out on a treacherous ride on the rapids of an Appalachian river. What they don't understand until it is too late is that they have ventured into Dickey's variation on the American underbelly, a wild, lawless, dangerous (and dangerously inbred) place isolated from the gloss of the late 20th century. In short order, the four men dig deep into their own suppressed primitiveness, defending themselves against armed cretins, facing the shock of real death on their carefully planned, death-defying adventure, and then squarely facing the suspicions of authority over their concealed actions. Boorman, a master teller of stories about individuals on peculiarly mythical journeys, does a terrifying and beautiful job of revealing the complexity of private and collective character--the way one can never be the same after glimpsing the sharp-clawed survivor in one's soul. --Tom Keogh

Product Description Deliverance (BD Book) Amazon.com "This is the weekend they didn't play golf," reads the ominously jocular tagline for director John Boorman's legendarily unsettling 1972 film, which stands along with Roman Polanski's Rosemary's Baby and the Coens' No Country for Old Men as one of the most inspired combinations of filmmaker and source material in cinematic history. Based on James Dickey's novel, Deliverance follows a group of Atlanta businessmen who take a canoe trip through the remote backwoods of North Georgia. What happens next has lost little of its power to shock, despite years of imitations and parodies. Boorman, a filmmaker whose best work (Point Blank, Excalibur) has often brushed up against the supernatural, is in full command of his material here, attaching a haunting, mythic quality to the starkness of Dickey's story. Combined with Vilmos Zsigmond's moody camerawork and the sparse banjo-driven score, the director gives his locations a heightened, Grimm quality. As gripping as the work behind the camera is though, the film wouldn't have nearly the kick it does without the central performances by Jon Voight, Burt Reynolds, Ronny Cox, and especially Ned Beatty, who skews the already slippery moral compass further by not playing his character as particularly sympathetic, even in the wake of the movie's most infamous scene. This 40th-anniversary collection does the movie justice, with a wealth of extras including a sterling commentary by Boorman (who details, hilariously, the friction between Dickey and the cast and crew), and a number of interviews with the actors, all of whom still seem justifiably proud of their work. Impressive as this supplemental material is, however, the main attraction remains the film itself, which hits a primal nerve early on and then just masterfully keeps on digging, transforming its story of horror into something primal and grasping. The times may have changed, but as the haunting final image shows, nothing stops a river. --Andrew Wright

Description
Richard Oswald's Der Hund von Baskerville, the last silent film starring Sherlock Holmes, has been less a legend than a rumor among cinephiles and Sherlockians. This seven-reel film, with it's long pedigree extending back to a German stage play written while Germany was at war with England, has been regarded as the most important of the 'Hound' made in Europe. Long considered lost, it was the last silent Sherlock Holmes film ever made, produced when German studios were the envy of the world. Seen here in two versions, one with English titles and one entirely in German with titles based on the original German censor records, Hund lives again accompanied by a new ensemble score from the incomparable Guenter Buchwald.Starring Carlyle Blackwell Sr. (Sherlock Holmes) and George Serov (Dr. Watson), this version of Der Hund is a deluxe makeover made during the dying days of the silent era. Much has been refined, but we are still in a world of secret passages behind sliding panels that lead to torture chambers, death traps, and a hiding place for the malodorous hound. No version of The Hound of the Baskervilles would be complete without Holmes and Watson pursuing Stapleton and his hound on the moor. The project to restore and preserve Der Hund von Baskerville is a collaboration between Filmoteka Narodowa and the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, overseen by film preservationist Rob Byrne. This exciting rediscovery comes from an original 35mm Czech distribution print in near-mint condition and materials, unseen until now from a private collection.

Product Description A disillusioned advertising executive is lured by a decadent Count into a bizarre plot to kill each other's unsavoury relatives. Stefano, a partner in a company that makes high-end commercials, wants to sell his share of the business and move to South America with his girlfriend, Fabienne. However his wife, in whose name the shares are registered, won't agree to the sale. Stefano goes to Venice with Fabienne for the weekend to escape his worries. There he meets the mysterious Count Tiepelo. Hearing of Stefano's business problems the Count tells him about his own brother who is making his life miserable. The Count then makes a startling suggestion - that he will kill Stefano's wife if Stefano kills the Count's brother. More amused than shocked, Stefano laughs off the idea. Then one day Stefano receives a phone call from the police; his wife had been found strangled and he is the prime suspect. From that moment on Stefano's life becomes a living nightmare as he discovers the true extent of the web the Count has woven around him. Finally, for Stefano, there is only one way out. With astonishing performances from Tomas Milian and Pierre Clementi, and settings that include a mist-wreathed Venice, a magnificent Lake Como villa and the glitzy world of advertising, THE DESIGNATED VICTIM is a gripping, dream-like thriller that takes us on a trip to hell as Stefano is driven to the very edge of insanity. Review The Venetian setting makes for an unusual and effective backdrop all the way to the memorable, tense climax. --Mondo Digital Mondo Macabro has done a great job bringing this underappreciated gem to Blu-ray with a beautiful presentation for the feature and a strong selection of extra features as well. Highly recommended. --Ian Jane, Rock! Shock! Pop! The core story always remains gripping, and Clémenti in particular lights up the screen. --DC Merryweather, Letterboxd

Description
A scene of no values, where climbing to the top means climbing into bed, cheap thrills fill the date book, and Rock 'n' Roll is Death & Destruction! David Markey's Desperate Teenage Lovedolls (1984) and its sequel Lovedolls Superstar (1986), two underground Super-8 cult films together for the first time, rebuilt and remastered in UHD. Chronicling the rise and fall and the subsequent resurrection in the sequel of the fictitious all girl band, the Lovedolls. "Kind of an all-girl Spinal Tap" said the Los Angeles Reader at the time of release. The positive critical response didn't stop there. "This is worthy of a Joan Crawford vehicle" chimed The Village Voice. Made on a micro-budget and cast with members of the Los Angeles punk scene (Redd Kross, Black Flag etc.), shot guerrilla-style on the streets of Hollywood and Santa Monica and Venice. This was a true Do-It-Yourself effort, made for the ragged fellow travelers on the scene at the time. It was also a testimony to inventiveness- made by disaffected kids without much resource, raised on junk food and trash television. The rags to riches story is one of classic Hollywood lore with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Produced for paltry $250.00, the film inspired a sequel with a budget 40 times that amount, made possible by Desperate Teenage Lovedolls success. Lovedolls Superstar was an even more ambitious project with more expansive, if not completely out-there story telling. The parodies were even more pointed, confronting pop and rock culture of the time. No one was spared; from "Brews Springstien" to Billy Jack, from feminism to cult behavior, and to punk rock itself. They were unafraid to poke fun at themselves! The Lovedolls films offer an antithesis to the squeaky clean, conservative 1980's America. They display just how far you can go with very little. David Markey would go on to helm many film projects, notably documenting the Sonic Youth / Nirvana tour in 1991 The Year Punk Broke. Bonus Materials 4K Restorations from the Original Super-8 Film Masters Desperate Teenage Lovedolls 40th Anniversary Panel (35 min.) - LA Times' Mark Olsen conducts Q&A with director David Markey and stars Jennifer Schwartz, Steven McDonald, and Tracey Lea Lovedolls Superstar at American Cinematheque, Egyptian Theater, Hollywood Commentary Tracks with director David Markey, producer Jordan Schwartz & stars Jeffrey McDonald, Steve McDonald, and Jennifer Schwartz Redd Kross 'Ballad of a Lovedoll' Music Video Deleted Scenes & Alt Takes Making of Featurette New Stereo & 5.1 Audio Mixes Remastered Theatrical Trailers Cast & Crew Actors: Jennifer Schwartz as Kitty Karry-all Steven McDonald as Johnny Tremaine / Rainbow Tremaine Hilary Rubens as Bunny Tremelo Janet Housden as Patch Kelly / Patch Christ Kim Pilkington as Alexandria "Cheetah" Axethrasher Jeffrey McDonald as Tears Brunel / Carl Celery Tracy Lea as Tanya Hearst / Patricia Anne Cloverfield Jello Biafra as Mr. President Sky Saxon as (Self) Victoria Peterson as Hippie mob killer / Jeannie Jeannie Brooks as Okia / Sadie / Zwonga Jong Annette Zilinskas as Switchblade Suzy Michael F. His drawings and sketches are exhibited and sold worldwide. Beck, Wilco, Sonic Youth and Pearl Jam have recorded his songs. But beneath Daniel Johnston's success as an artist and musician is an incredible story of genius touched by madness: diagnosed as manic-depressive, Johnston has spent the last three decades of his life in-and-out of mental institutions. Told through a compelling combination of interviews, home movies and performance footage, THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON is "a harrowing, hilarious and ultimately moving new documentary film" (Jim Farber, New York Daily News). The bone-deep disillusionment of postwar film noir becomes a powerful vehicle to explore America’s racial injustices in Carl Franklin’s richly atmospheric Devil in a Blue Dress, an adaptation of the hard-boiled novel by Walter Mosley. Denzel Washington has charisma to burn as the jobless ex-GI Easy Rawlins, who sees a chance to make some quick cash when he’s recruited to find the missing lover (Jennifer Beals) of a wealthy mayoral candidate in late-1940s Los Angeles—only to find himself embroiled in murder, political intrigue, and a scandal that crosses the treacherous color lines of a segregated society. Featuring breakout work by Don Cheadle as Rawlins’s cheerfully trigger-happy sidekick, this stylish mystery both channels and subverts classic noir tropes as it exposes the bitter racial realities underlying the American dream. Description
Description
This playful, profound, and immensely moving docu-fantasia by Kirsten Johnson is a valentine to the director’s beloved father, Dick Johnson, made as she has begun to face the reality of losing him to dementia. Using the language of cinema both to defy death and to confront it head-on, Johnson mischievously envisions an array of ways in which the man she loves most in the world might die, staging a series of alternately darkly comic and colorfully imaginative tableaux interwoven with raw vérité footage capturing the pair’s tender but increasingly fragile bond. Tackling taboo questions of aging, mortality, and grief with subversive humor and surprising grace, Dick Johnson Is Dead is ultimately a triumphant celebration of life, and of the gentle, funny, unforgettable man at its center. Long live Dick Johnson. DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES New 2K digital master, approved by director Kirsten Johnson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack New audio commentary featuring Johnson, cowriter and editor Nels Bangerter, and documentary sound recordist Judy Karp New conversation among Johnson and her fellow producers Katy Chevigny and Marilyn Ness and coproducer Maureen A. THE ULTIMATE IN KUNG FU...ONLY ONE FIGHTER WILL LIVE! Another Kung Fu vehicle from the infamous Shaw Brothers Studio, 'Disciples of Shaolin' AKA 'Hong quan xiao zi', delivers a typically power-packed Hong Kong tale of enemy gangs and super cool fight scenes. When shaolin disciple Kuan Fung Yi (Sheng Fu) takes a job at a textile factory he soon becomes embroiled in a bitter and violent clash with the rival Manchu clan who run a neighboring mill. As well delivering some impressive martial arts set pieces, Disciples of Shaolin also provides a political punch, underlining the abuse of workers and the corruption of cruel bosses. Fast, fierce and thought provoking, this is a must for collectors of extreme Asian cinema. Description
One of the iconoclastic Pier Paolo Pasolini’s most radical provocations, Teorema finds the auteur moving beyond the poetic, proletarian earthiness that first won him renown and notoriety with a coolly cryptic exploration of bourgeois spiritual emptiness. Terence Stamp stars as the mysterious stranger—perhaps an angel, perhaps a devil—who, one by one, seduces the members of a wealthy Milanese family (including European cinema icons Silvana Mangano, Massimo Girotti, Laura Betti, and Anne Wiazemsky), precipitating an existential crisis in each of their lives. Unfolding nearly wordlessly in a procession of sacred and profane images, this tantalizing metaphysical riddle—blocked from exhibition by the Catholic Church for degeneracy—is at once a blistering Marxist treatise on sex, religion, and art and a primal scream into the void. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • Alternate English-dubbed soundtrack, featuring the voice of actor Terence Stamp and others • Audio commentary from 2007 featuring Robert S. C. Gordon, author of Pasolini: Forms of Subjectivity • Introduction by director Pier Paolo Pasolini from 1969 • Interview from 2007 with Stamp • New interview with John David Rhodes, author of Stupendous, Miserable City: Pasolini’s Rome • New English subtitle translation • More! • PLUS: An essay by film scholar James Quandt
