Pioneer woman filmmaker Lois Weber weaves a beautifully simple story of one shop girl s struggles into a heartbreaking cinematic masterpiece. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles including a remarkable scene in Pershing Square and another in front of Woolworth s on Broadway Weber follows the daily travails of Eva Meyer, whose meager wages from her job at a five-and-dime store are the sole financial support for three younger sisters, a struggling mother, and a father who prefers beer and penny dreadfuls to work. When there is barely enough to cover the grocer s bill, Eva is forced to patch the holes in the soles of her shoes with cardboard. But with each rainy day and every splinter, her plight becomes more painful, and finally intolerable. With no solution in sight, Eva is forced to consider other options.

Produced by Arthur Freed and directed by George Sidney, this 1951 version of the saga of riverboat lives and loves has glorious stars (Kathryn Grayson, Ava Gardner, Howard Keel, Marge and Gower Champion) in Technicolor radiance, a made-from-scratch 170-foot paddle wheeler, timeless songs and an equally timeless outcry against racial bigotry. "This was music that would outlast Kern's day and mine," Ferber said in recalling her first reaction to hearing "Ol' Man River." She was right as rain.

David Cronenberg, long preoccupied with how technology reshapes body and mind, delivers one of his most personal works: a mournful meditation on grief, mortality and love disguised as a corporate-espionage thriller. Karsh (Vincent Cassel) is the mysterious founder of a technology that lets the bereaved watch their loved ones' bodies as they decompose. When vandals attack his futuristic cemetery, he suspects a conspiracy, and the investigation forces him to face the trauma — and the unanswered questions — surrounding the death of his wife Becca (Diane Kruger). Made after the death of Cronenberg's own wife, the film takes on sex, surveillance and the ultimate body horror: the decay that waits for every body.
