Screen legend Steve McQueen (Bullitt) slams his motorcycle into high gear and leads the way in this action-packed classic about a group of Allied POWs who attempt one of the largest and most daring breakouts in history. A masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (Bad Day at Black Rock), screenwriters James Clavell (The Satan Bug) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar) and composer Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven), The Great Escape is one of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time! As World War II rages on, the Germans open Stalag Luft III, a maximum security prisoner-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assemble the finest escape team in military history. Together, under the guidance of the brilliant Bartlett (Richard Attenborough, Brighton Rock), the resourceful Hendley (James Garner, Support Your Local Sheriff) and the steely, determined Hilts (McQueen), the men plot, scheme and dig their way to freedom…at any cost! Charles Bronson (Breakheart Pass), James Coburn (A Fistful of Dynamite), Donald Pleasence (The Black Windmill), James Donald (The Bridge on the River Kwai) and David McCallum (Mosquito Squadron) fill out the iconic cast of this spectacular, true-life blockbuster. Before she became a celebrated documentarian (and notorious public figure), Leni Riefenstahl was a popular actress, best known for her “mountain films” made by director Arnold Fanck. The Holy Mountain (Der heilige Berg, 1926) and The White Hell of Pitz Palu (Die weisse Hölle vom Piz Palü, 1929) were awe-inspiring dramas of romance and survival, but her 1927 film The Great Leap (Der große Sprung) was something surprisingly different: a playful romantic comedy set high atop the Dolomotes. Riefenstahl plays an Italian peasant whose simple life is upended when a series of urbanites invade the slopes for a ski vacation. This bubbly comedy (featuring Riefenstahl’s usual on-screen love interest, Luis Trenker) combines slapstick laughs with stunning footage of acrobatic skiing and rock climbing, making it perhaps the most entertaining (if unconventional) entry in the cycle of German mountain films. Special Features: -Audio commentary by film historian Samm Deighan

From Preston Sturges, the legendary writer/director of Christmas in July, The Lady Eve, The Palm Beach Story and Unfaithfully Yours comes this classic comedy about an opportunist who turns corruption into a promising political career, but struggles to stay on top when he tries to go honest. Dan McGinty (Brian Donlevy, The Quatermass Xperiment) is a hungry hobo who wows the ballot-stuffers by voting 37 times in an election for Mayor. They weren’t forgotten by history… they were left out on purpose! Screen legend Lee Marvin (Prime Cut, Monte Walsh) is Great Scout, Kay Lenz (The Passage) is Cathouse Thursday and with a little help from their friends (and enemies), including Oliver Reed (The Hunting Party), Robert Culp (Hickey & Boggs), Sylvia Miles (92 in the Shade), Strother Martin (Cool Hand Luke) and Elizabeth Ashley (Golden Needles), they’re out to take over the lusty world of modern Colorado in 1908. In this ribald adventure, Marvin (as a leathery frontier scout) and Reed (as his half-breed partner) try to recover $60,000 stolen by their arch enemy Culp. Instead they end up saddle-bagged with a bevy of Wild West prostitutes all named for the days of the week, one almost-virtuous young lady named Thursday, and an acid-tongued ex-sweetheart (Ashley). The stage is set for some big complications as this colorful group takes on the tycoons, madams and the effects of modern times. Actor turned director Don Taylor (The Island of Dr. Moreau, Damien: Omen II) directed this rip-roaring comedy western. Special Features: -Theatrical Trailer

Product Description **RELEASED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU RAY IN NORTH AMERICA ON THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS ORIGINAL RELEASE** On an unforgiving, snow swept frontier, a group of bloodthirsty bounty hunters, led by the vicious Loco (Klaus Kinski Nosferatu, For a Few Dollars More) prey on a band of persecuted outlaws who have taken to the hills. As the price on each head is collected one-by-one, only a mute gunslinger named Silence (Jean-Louis Trintignant The Conformist) stands between the innocent refuges and the greed and corruption that the bounty hunters represent. But, in this harsh, brutal world, the lines between right and wrong aren't always clear and good doesn't always triumph. Featuring superb photography and a haunting score from maestro Ennio Morricone, director Sergio Corbucci's bleak, brilliant and violent vision of an immoral, honorless west is widely considered to be among the very best and most influential Euro-Westerns ever made. Bonus features include: - Cox on Corbucci - filmmaker and author Alex Cox surveys Sergio Corbucci's career and how The Great Silence fits within the maestro's oeuvre. - Western, Italian Style - This 1968 documentary on Italian westerns includes prime behind the scenes footage of The Great Silence. - Two never-before-seen alternate endings, including the option to play one of the alternate endings with Alex Cox commentary. - The Great Silence original theatrical trailer. - The Great Silence 2018 theatrical trailer. - Italian and English language versions. - Ending the Silence - a new essay about The Great Silence by film critic Simon Abrams. Review I'm not generally one for nostalgia, but I do regret the loss of a certain kind of craziness that used to flourish in movies the kind that is on rich and ripe display in The Great Silence, a 1968 Italian western by Sergio Corbucci that is only now receiving a proper theatrical release in this country. There is something about the film's brazen mixing of incompatible elements that defies categorization, imitation or even sober critical assessment. It's anarchic and rigorous, sophisticated and goofy, heartfelt and cynical. The score, by Ennio Morricone, is as mellow as wine. The action is raw, nasty and blood-soaked. The story is preposterous, the politics sincere... The mood is sometimes jaunty, but The Great Silence is no joke, and the fatalism of its ending serves as an implicit critique of the sentimental optimism of many Hollywood westerns. Power speaks louder than silence. --A.O. Scott, The New York Times Packs a bleak, bloody punch...[and] goes out with a devastating bang. - Simon Abrams, The Village Voice Brutal, bleakly beautiful spaghetti Western filmed on stark locations in the Dolomites, with one of the most uncompromising and unforgettable finales ever filmed. --Leonard Maltin Sensationally grim...be prepared for a holy bludgeoning. - David Edelstein, New York Magazine The greatest spaghetti Western ever made. --Alex Cox, director of Sid & Nancy and Repo Man

Before plumbing the depths of horror and despair with such films as Nosferatu (1922) and Faust (1926), Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau crafted a moody drama of a storm-bound manor and the grim mystery that Lurks within: The Haunted Castle (1921). A hunting party is interrupted by the arrival of a notorious Count (Lothar Mehnert), who is believed to have murdered his brother. The uninvited guest sets in motion an elaborate plot to resurrect the ghosts of the past and bring to light the dark secret that lies at the center of his brother's death. Breaking away from the dark, foreboding dramas for which he was becoming known, Murnau explored the realm of light comedy in a playful espionage thriller reminisent of Ernst Lubitsch: The Finances of the Grand Duke. Harry Liedtke stars as a "benevolent dictator" who must preserve the tiny nation of Abacco by fending off creditors, wooing a wealthy Russian princess (Mady Christians), and evading a band of demonic conspirators (including Nosferatu himself, Max Schreck).

Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary silent film uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn of the century psychiatric patients. Far from a dry dissertation on the topic, the film itself is a witches’ brew of the scary, the gross, and the darkly humorous. Christensen’s mix and match approach to genre anticipates gothic horror, documentary re creation, and the essay film, making for an experience unlike anything else in the history of cinema. Blu-ray pressing. Beautifully restored special edition. When a Los Angeles police officer is savagely gunned down, a city-wide manhunt ensues for his cunning and ruthless killer. But finding the murderer, chillingly played by Richard Basehart in only his third film, proves difficult for Detective Marty Brennan (Scott Brady) and his colleagues as Basehart's Roy Morgan is always one step ahead of the law. Will modern police methods and sheer determination be enough to find the elusive cop-killer before he strikes again? Visually stunning, cinematographer John Alton's brilliant use of light and shadows shine in this ground-breaking police procedural that paved the way for the TV series Dragnet; which itself spawned an entire sub-genre of television crime-dramas that are still popular to this day. Based on true events, He Walked by Night was directed by Alfred L. Werker, along with an uncredited Anthony Mann (who is believed to be responsible for the film's most iconic scenes). Co-written by John C. Higgins (Raw Deal) and Crane Wilbur (The Phenix City Story), it also features Jack Webb who went on to create and star in the aforementioned Dragnet.

Adapted from author Nikos Kazantzakis (Zorba the Greek, The Last Temptation of Christ) by the world-renowned Jules Dassin, the director of Rififi, Never on Sunday and Topkapi, this powerful film asks: What would happen if Jesus came down to Earth a second time? NEW 4K RESTORATION FROM UNIVERSAL PICTURES! Hell Bent (1918) is a rousing Western from the series of Cheyenne Harry adventures that director John Ford (still credited as Jack Ford early in his career) made with star Harry Carey (Straight Shooting). Cheyenne Harry was an outlaw with a heart of gold, played with stoic warmth by Carey, whose performances were a pivotal influence on John Wayne. In Hell Bent Harry flees the law after a poker game shootout, and arrives in the town of Rawhide, where he becomes friendly with local cowboy Cimmaron Bill (Duke Lee) and the kindly dance hall girl Bess Thurston (Neva Gerber), who is tending to her sick mother. Gang leader Beau Ross (Joseph Harris) falls hard for Bess, and kidnaps her. Cheyenne Harry goes to desperate lengths traveling across the deadly desert in order to free Bess from the hard-bitten Ross. Special Features: -Archival audio interview. with John Ford by Joseph McBride -Audio commentary by Joseph McBride, author of Searching for John Ford -Music by Zachary Marsh -Video essay by film critic Tag Gallagher
