Description
Dr. John Markway, an anthropologist with an interest in psychic phenomena, takes two specially selected women to Hill House, a reportedly haunted mansion. Eleanor, a lonely, eccentric woman with a supernatural event in her past, and the bold Theodora, who has ESP, join John and the mansion's heir, cynical Luke. They are immediately overwhelmed by strange sounds and events, and Eleanor comes to believe the house is alive and speaking directly to her. Robert Wise’s 1963 THE HAUNTING is set in an old mansion which has evil spirits. Wise considered the movie to be a tribute to Val Lewton whose 1940’s horror films were built around the idea that audiences were most scared by what they could not see. Rather like Jack Clayton’s THE INNOCENTS repressed sexuality and hysteria might be what is causing “the haunting”.
