Superintendent Grodman of Scotland Yard built an airtight case into a noose around a killer's neck. Then, too late, evidence exonerates the hanged man. Grodman retires in shame. Then a new case, a diabolical locked-room murder, gives Grodman the chance to redeem himself. Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre play Grodman and his effete artist comrade, hunting for clues in the fog-bound, gaslit streets of 1890 London.

THE VERDICT (1946) was the first full length feature directed by Don Siegel. Frequently paired as supporting players Sidney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre are the leads and essentially the good guys here. Set in 1890 London the film has plush production values. The byplay of the two stars is delightful. Newly released on a Warner Archive blu ray which include two Warner Brother cartoons which parody Lorre. Great entertainment.
