John Wayne plays Tom Craig, an ambitious pharmacist who moves into a brawling frontier town in the gold-rush days of California. He soon locks horns with the local crime lord, Britt Dawson (Albert Dekker), who has become wealthy from forced tributes levied on the townspeople.
