54 4K 08/26 Blu-ray (Rental)

Disc 1 contains the 1998 theatrical cut of the film, newly scanned and restored in 4K from the 35mm original camera negative and presented in Dolby Vision, with new audio commentaries by writer/director Mark Christopher (moderated by Justin LaLiberty) and by filmmaker and writer Drew Burnett Gregory. New York City, 1979: working-class Jersey City teenager Shane (Ryan Phillippe) becomes infatuated with Studio 54, the lavish Manhattan nightclub famed for its decadence. His time at 54 brings him into the orbit of club owner Steve Rubell (Mike Myers), busboy Greg (Breckin Meyer), coat checker Anita (Salma Hayek) and actress Julie (Neve Campbell). Written and directed by Mark Christopher, 54 was heavily re-shot ahead of its 1998 theatrical release, then re-assembled in a long-awaited director's cut in 2015 using over forty minutes of different footage. Anchored by a star-making performance from Phillippe and a bombastic period soundtrack, it is an essential ode to old New York ripe for rediscovery. This definitive Cinématographe release pairs the new 4K restoration of the theatrical version with the 2015 director's cut — an exemplary case study in how drastically different one film can be between two edits.
