Description
Andy Milligan clawed his way from the depths of '60s independent cinema straight to the abyss of grindhouse infamy like no other filmmaker in history. 3 DISC COLLECTION INCLUDES 2 THOUGHT-LOST FILMS PLUS THE ACCLAIMED DOCUMENTARY THE DEGENERATE: THE LIFE AND FILMS OF ANDY MILLIGAN WITH 2 RARELY SEEN MOVIE PROJECTS AND 5+ COMBINED HOURS OF SPECIAL FEATURESGutter Auteur: The Lost Legacy of Andy Milligan is a definitive 3-disc tribute to one of cinema's most transgressive, misunderstood, and obsessively fascinating filmmakers. A pioneering outsider who clawed his way from the depths of 1960s underground filmmaking to the grindhouse gutters of 42nd Street, Andy Milligan remains, as Artforum called him, "The Fassbinder of 42nd Street" -- a volatile, visionary auteur whose work defied convention and decency alike. This landmark collection from Severin Films assembles an astonishing array of newly unearthed and restored material, including two features long thought lost: The Degenerates (1967), a post-nuclear nightmare rediscovered in a Brussels vault, and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me! (1968), a searing psychodrama recovered from an Amsterdam archive. Both have been meticulously restored from their only surviving film elements, resurrecting Milligan's raw, handmade cinema for the first time in decades. Also included is the acclaimed 2025 documentary The Degenerate: The Life and Films of Andy Milligan, hailed by RogerEbert.com as "an eye-opening look into one of the weirder and darker corners of cinema history." Directed by Josh Johnson and Grayson Tyler Johnson, it captures the chaos, creativity, and pain of a filmmaker whose work was as personal as it was perverse. The set goes even deeper with two rarely seen projects -- the early short Compass Rose and 1979's gothic curio House of Seven Belles -- alongside more than five hours of special features that peel back the myth and madness surrounding Milligan's legacy. Among the extensive extras are Team Degenerate, a Tribeca Film Festival Q&A with directors Johnson and Johnson, author Jimmy McDonough (The Ghastly One), and Milligan collaborators Hope Stansbury, Natalie Rogers, Ken Lane, and John Borske; deleted scenes and trailers from The Degenerate; a feature-length audio commentary on The Degenerates with Milligan expert Alex DiSanto; the archival 1975 audio interview between Milligan and author Stéphane Bourgoin; and multiple new interviews with actors, scholars, and historians including Stephen Thrower (Nightmare USA). Other highlights include Two Weeks in Woodstock with actress Laura Cunningham, Magic Time! with Peter Ratray, Dove and Divine with Natalie Rogers, Licentious Lunacy with Alex DiSanto, and Thrower's multi-part analyses of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me!, House of Seven Belles, and Compass Rose. A delirious collision of archival discovery, academic depth, and grindhouse sleaze, Gutter Auteur is essential viewing for fans of Andy Warhol's Bad, John Waters, and the darkest reaches of American exploitation cinema. As Screen Anarchy notes, Milligan "created a unique oeuvre that defies and defiles common decency at a level that is both shocking and admirable." Morbidly Beautiful called him "one of exploitation's most fascinating figures," and Video Watchblog's Tim Lucas described him as "one of fantastic cinema's most maligned--and malignant--originals." Raw, angry, and unrepentant, Andy Milligan's legacy has finally been given the restoration and respect it deserves. Steamy effort also stars Fred Robsahm, Dana Ghia. 90 min. Widescreen; Soundtracks: Italian, English; Subtitles: English; audio commentary. In Italian with English subtitles/Dubbed in English.

*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* In a near dystopian future, Japan's government launches PLAN 75, a program encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve its rapidly aging population's social and economic burdens. In Chie Hayakawa's remarkable and sensitive feature film debut, the lives of three ordinary citizens intersect in this new reality as they confront the crushing callousness of a world ready to dispose of those no longer deemed valuable. Legendary Japanese actress Chieko Baishō stars as a 78-year-old Michi who considers signing up for the program after losing her meager but fulfilling hotel job and the means to live independently. A young Plan 75 salesman Himoru (Hayato Isomura), initially believes in the program's benefits and serves as the human face of the program. And Maria (Stephanie Arianne), a Filipino care worker living overseas, reluctantly accepts a position with PLAN 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film's chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However, Hayakawa's view is far from grim, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live. Bonus Features: 1. Filmmaker Chie Hayakawa’s first short film: Niagara (2013) 2. Asian Movie Pulse Interview with Filmmaker Chie Hayakawa 3. Booklet essay by critic Hayley Scanlon

*This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Dorine, a timid and put-upon proofreader and tech expert long employed by a fashion magazine, is informed that due to budget cuts, she will be forced to work from home. Unfortunately, her home life is dominated by caring for her cruel, elderly mother, and it lacks the vitality of the office environment and its myriad personalities. But after she unintentionally electrocutes a coworker, Dorine discovers a tidy new method to fight her boredom and loneliness: murder. Secretly transporting the body of her colleague to her suburban basement, Dorine sets about looking to add new “friends” to this growing social group amid her company's unfortunate downsizing. Pragmatically dispatching an ever-increasing number of both fellow employees and unlucky random people, Dorine maintains a convivial life with her rapidly decomposing corpses, while she's not on the clock, of course. The only feature film directed by internationally acclaimed and award-winning photographer Cindy Sherman, OFFICE KILLER is a delectably bloody, tightly-paced contemporary slasher that offers a grimly humorous take on the serial killer thriller and a wry look at the corporate environment of the 1990s. With its bleak, lyrical photography and a score by Lounge Lizards co-founder Evan Lurie, it features Emmy®-winner Carol Kane (When a Stranger Calls) as Dorine, along with Molly Ringwald (The Breakfast Club), Jeanne Tripplehorn (Basic Instinct, TV's Big Love), and a guest appearance from Eric Bogosian (The Stuff). Vinegar Syndrome is overjoyed to at last offer the 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut of this criminally underseen horror gem, newly restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative and packed with extras, including all-new interviews with its cast and crew. Bonus Features: 1. 2-disc Set: 4K Ultra HD / Region A Blu-ray 2. 4K UHD presented in Dolby Vision High-Dynamic-Range 3. Newly scanned & restored in 4K from its 35mm original camera negative 4. *This listing is for the standard edition version and does NOT come with a limited edition slipcase!* Vinegar Syndrome specializes in the masterful restoration and distribution of cult, horror, and erotic films from the 1960s-90s. Concerned that their latest production isn’t scary enough for modern audiences, the makers of a trashy horror movie titled Dirty Blood call in a spirit medium to host a seance for the cast and crew, hoping this will add a little authenticity to the proceedings. However, the producers get a little more than they bargained for when the medium inadvertently summons the spirit of the notorious Victorian-era serial killer Jack the Ripper. As filming presses on, the real horror commences when various members of the production start winding up brutally murdered. Could this be the ongoing work of a sadistic maniac who’s been preying on prostitutes in the area, or could something much more terrifying—and supernatural—be afoot? One in a series of films made under the “Lucio Fulci presents” banner (originally developed under the title I maestri del thriller), which sought to capitalize on the name of Italy’s Godfather of Gore, MASSACRE is one of the standout entries in the cycle and a pleasingly lurid slasher effort helmed by Burial Ground director Andrea Bianchi. Far sleazier than many of its late 80s horror competitors and packed full of bare skin, lesbian intrigue and hack-and-slash action (not to mention a lively score from Luigi Ceccarelli, who virtually rehashed his music from Rats: Night of Terror), Vinegar Syndrome is thrilled to unfurl MASSACRE in its UHD premiere, newly restored in 4K from its original 16mm camera negative and loaded with new special features. Love Letter / Moon Has Risen (Criterion) 03/26 Blu-ray (Rental)

Description
Kinuyo Tanaka was already one of Japan’s greatest actors—celebrated for her collaborations with auteurs such as Kenji Mizoguchi, Yasujiro Ozu, and Mikio Naruse—when she took a brave leap by embarking on a directing career in a studio system that actively discouraged female filmmakers. The six features she made over the course of a decade center on women characters who refuse to conform to restrictive roles as they seek independence. With compassion and insight, Tanaka critiques the social conditions and forces that shape her heroines’ struggles: sex work and social shaming, the expectation of passively entering arranged marriages, taboos surrounding illness and the female body, imperialism, and religious persecution and forbidden love. INCLUDES The films: Love Letter, The Moon Has Risen, Forever a Woman, The Wandering Princess, Girls of the Night, and Love Under the Crucifix PLUS: An essay by critic Imogen Sara Smith LOVE LETTER Released a year after the American occupation of Japan ended, Kinuyo Tanaka’s directorial debut explores the professional and personal conflicts of Reikichi (Masayuki Mori), a repatriated veteran who searches for his lost love (Yoshiko Kuga) while translating romantic letters from Japanese women to American GIs. Adapted from a novel by Fumio Niwa, Love Letter depicts with incisive complexity Japanese soldiers struggling to adapt to a changed society, as well as the moral condemnation of Japanese women who became involved with the enemy. THE MOON HAS RISEN For her second film, Kinuyo Tanaka directed a script by legendary filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu, one of her mentors. Though informed by Ozu’s singular take on familial relationships, The Moon Has Risen also possesses Tanaka’s lively and elegant comic sensibility in its portrait of a widower (Chishu Ryu) who lives with his three daughters (Hisako Yamane, Yoko Sugi, and Mie Kitahara). Kitahara shines as the spirited youngest sister, whose matchmaking schemes force the family to confront—with amusing bewilderment—Japanese society’s rapidly evolving mores. FOREVER A WOMAN Generally regarded as Kinuyo Tanaka’s masterpiece, as well as her first personal film, Forever a Woman tells the story of a recent divorcée (Yumeji Tsukioka) who is diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. In adapting the real-life story of poet Fumiko Nakajo, Tanaka and screenwriter Sumie Tanaka (a longtime collaborator of Mikio Naruse’s, though of no familial relation to Kinuyo) investigate issues of mortality, sexuality, and female independence with a frankness and audacity unprecedented in postwar Japanese cinema. THE WANDERING PRINCESS Kinuyo Tanaka’s first film in both color and CinemaScope is an epic about a woman caught in the torrents of history. Based on the memoirs of Hiro Saga, The Wandering Princess tells the story of Ryuko (Machiko Kyo), an aristocrat who, at the outset of World War II, enters an arranged marriage with Futetsu (Eiji Funakoshi), the younger brother of a soon-to-be-deposed monarch. With the story of Ryuko’s enmeshment in the Japanese colonization of Manchuria, Tanaka realizes with startling depth her ambition to relate a historical saga from a critical female perspective. GIRLS OF THE NIGHT With Girls of the Night, Kinuyo Tanaka reunited with screenwriter Sumie Tanaka to explore Japan’s attempted reformation of former sex workers. The film follows Kuniko (Chisako Hara), who enters a rehabilitation center after the Prostitution Prevention Law prohibits her line of work. But creating a new life proves treacherous—wherever Kuniko goes, the past catches up with her. In once again taking on challenging subject matter, Kinuyo Tanaka paints an empathetic portrait of a fragile community of outcasts. LOVE UNDER THE CRUCIFIX Kinuyo Tanaka’s final work as a director is a large-scale, sixteenth-century-set costume drama in the style of the golden age of Japanese cinema. Produced by the independent production company Ninjin Kurabu, Love Under the Crucifix centers on the forbidden romance between Ogin (Ineko Arima), daughter of a famous tea master, and Ukon (Tatsuya Nakadai), a married samurai. The ruling power’s prohibition of Ukon’s Christian faith forces the lovers to fight against the prejudices of an oppressive society while finding their way to mutual devotion.
